Why I Broadcast My Life

I remember the day I decided to hook up voyeurcams in my home: I was watching my friend on HER voyeurcam all the way across the country. She sat propped up in her bed reading a book. I was HOOKED.

Watching her do next-to-nothing meant SO much to me. I felt slightly naughty, peering into the privacy of her bedroom. I felt comforted just being able to CONNECT with her, albeit wordlessly and without acknowledgement, just by seeing her live her life, enjoying herself with her nose in a book. I felt reassured. It was like turning on the radio in the middle of the night when you’re alone and just want to hear a voice and know someone else is out there muddling through life the same way you are. I found my own voyeuristic urges so compelling I HAD to offer my own site members the same experience.

That was back in 2002. Now we have up to thirteen cams in our home logged in around the clock broadcasting our most intimate moments around the world. We look forward to adding even MORE cams to the lineup and in better locations when we can afford more bandwidth (a T1 line would be nice), computers, and our own home one of these days.

I’m not an exhibitionist as much as I am a voyeur; I like offering the spycams because they are something *I* like as a voyeur, so I like delivering that feature to people who want the same things I want: to be able to enjoy another person without actually having the pressure to interact. To see and hear things you weren’t meant to see. To have someone disclose intimate things without it being a conversation or something specifically directed at you. I am always thirsty for people’s secrets, and somehow the mundane details of daily life are filled with little things that ARE very secret, like the way someone’s face looks at a computer monitor when she’s concentrating instead of face to face with a person, trying to show that she’s interested and she cares. When I am alone, the secret is that I am much less animated and way more vulnerable. I say things I would never EVER say out loud if I were in a coffee shop or a library.

Oh yeah, AND I FART A LOT.

The Sealed Letter
4 of 5 stars
Not as engrossing as Slammerkin, but interesting, informative and engaging as a fictionalized version of a true story exposing the lives of well-off women (and feminists and lesbians) in Victorian England.

It's hard to avoid comp...

Bottomfeeder: A Novel
4 of 5 stars
For some reason I *want* to only give this book three stars but that would be a lie; I didn't just "like it", I actually "REALLY liked it".

I'm not familiar with Fingerman's other work, but just being aware of...

The Lady Who Liked Clean Restrooms: The Chronicle of One of the Strangest Stories Ever to Be Rumoured About Around New York
3 of 5 stars
A cute little morbid trick of a book and so short I can say that I kind of enjoyed it. I appreciated the casual way considering whoring was treated, but am guessing it wasn't really casual and was supposed to illustrate just how far she had...

The Intuitionist

I loved the atmosphere and tone of the book. I enjoy reading about characters who are socially isolated and/or solitary by choice. I also enjoy reading about the lives of machines especially when they're described with a touch of mysticism ...

Young Men in Spats
4 of 5 stars
I might have enjoyed this even more than the Wooster & Jeeves books. LOVED the last story, which was oddly disturbing (only mildly so, of course, which made it very surreal). Also appreciated the self-consciousness (again, MILD) regarding c...
